CHARACTER SURVEY & DETAILS
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Ryuunosuke is 5'8" and weighs 143lbs. He's a bit on the short side.
2. How old is he?
Twenty-four; his birthday is January 31st, 1969. Fate/Zero takes place ~1993.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
He doesn't slouch exactly, but Ryuunosuke does always seem to have a relaxed air about him. This only changes when he's really excited, but even then his posture doesn't change much.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
He's fit with no known illnesses, conditions, or disabilities.
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Relaxed, of course. Ryuunosuke tends to move around a lot when he's talking - including gesturing. His gestures are always very broad and excited. He's always full of energy, even when he's moving at a more relaxed pace.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
Ryuunosuke is described as very attractive in the light novels, and he does look quite handsome in the anime. He knows he's good-looking and uses that to his advantage to lure women back to his place so he can kill them. Ryuunosuke doesn't particularly care about how attractive he is otherwise; just as long as he can use his good looks to his advantage!
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
There's really nothing to note here; Ryuunosuke isn't tanned, but he's not exactly pale either. He doesn't have any obvious scars, though he has a few marks here and there from where he's picked at scabs and they've scarred over. Otherwise, there's nothing to note.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
Ryuunosuke's hair is orange - not red - and falls to the base of his neck. His bangs are parted in the center and tend to get in his eyes. His hair isn't thin, but it's not thick either. He doesn't put much effort into maintaining it. Is it his natural hair color?? Probably not.
9. What color are his eyes?
Black. Ryuunosuke's eyes are very dead-looking - they always appear black no matter what lighting he's in. His eyes are the only part of his face that never reflect his excitement or pleasure.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
He has the mark of a Master - the Command Seals - on the back of his right hand.
11. What are his chief tension centers?
Ryuunosuke doesn't usually get tense. When he does get tense, his shoulders and arms tend to take the brunt of the tension. His hands usually quiver too. Thankfully he can dispel tension very quickly and doesn't usually worry about anything. He's not used to being tense, so his muscles tend to freeze up and he doesn't move around quite as much as he normally does when he is tense.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
Just like Ryuunosuke, his wardrobe is very relaxed. He doesn't bother color coordinating and will wear whatever he pulls out of the closet. The only thing he does plan is leopard print. He has at least one article of clothing with leopard print on it. He usually wears leopard print shoes, but if he's not wearing those shoes, then he's wearing something else with leopard print. Ryuunosuke likes bright colors, especially purples.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
His clothes fit well for the most part. He tends to wear looser shirts and jackets, but Ryuunosuke is very fond of tight pants. He seems comfortable in anything he wears, regardless of how ridiculous it might look (like his mismatching jacket and pants).
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
Yes he does. Considering that "on the job" involves murdering and cutting people up, he does wear the same things. If he can't get the blood out of his clothes, he'll burn them along with the victim's clothes.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Leopard print briefs. I'm so sorry.
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Ryuunosuke's voice is relatively light and high-pitched. When he gets excited his voice tends to go a bit hoarse and rises an octave or so.
2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
He tends to talk very fast when he's excited or trying to get a point across. He talks very easily and casually. Ryuunosuke is actually very polite in his speech, though he doesn't use honorifics very often at all, instead defaulting to "sir" or "ma'am."
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
No, he doesn't. Ryuunosuke tends to be overly friendly, but that's not a verbal tic or anything.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
He's fluent in Japanese, of course. Ryuunosuke also has some Chinese history and can speak Mandarin passably. He knows a bit of English, but not enough to communicate very well.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
No, he doesn't.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
He's a very good impromptu speaker - Ryuunosuke never bothers to think about what he's saying (unless he's attempting to lure victims back to his place).
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
Ryuunosuke is very relaxed and informal when he's speaking, especially when he's talking to women or children. He can be respectful - especially to Caster - but normally he doesn't change the way he talks to anyone. When he's upset he tends to say less, but it's not all that much of a change.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Ryuunosuke is quite smart. He's more street-smart than book-smart; he's managed to avoid being caught for his crimes for years, and he picks up things very quickly.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
He definitely thinks on his feet. He can plan things out in advance as well, but Ryuunosuke works best when he's acting on impulse.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
Intuitive and idealistic. He trusts his gut instinct and it has never failed him. When it comes to seeking out victims, he's never once picked someone he hasn't been able to pursue and kill. This tends to lead to overconfidence, but he hasn't messed up yet. He thinks that he's an artist, and his views are very idealistic.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
Ryuunosuke graduated from high school and attended college for a few years. He didn't graduate or obtain a degree, but he studied medicine, art, and drama before finally dropping out. He's smart, he just doesn't have much interest in school.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Obviously he's an expert in his "art." He has extensive knowledge of how the human body works (mostly from hands-on learning). Ryuunosuke knows a lot about acting as well. He's interested in learning more about art, music, acting, and of course, human anatomy.
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Extrovert; Ryuunosuke likes being around people. He doesn't like being alone - even dead bodies make better company.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Ryuunosuke is normally even-tempered, but once something upsets him, he'll suddenly be in tears. He doesn't get angry, so his mood swings always go from happy to sad or vice-versa. He's very cheerful and bright, and Ryuunosuke tends to be more laid-back. He can be very driven when it comes to killing, but that's about the only thing he's genuinely interested in.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Relaxed, of course. He tends to be very enthusiastic in general and likes to meet and communicate with new people. He's very friendly.
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
Act; he does go out and kill people, after all.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Flight. He tends to move around a lot to ensure he won't be captured. Ryuunosuke has never actually been put in a situation where he has to choose fight or flight, however. He's been quite lucky in that regard.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
His sense of humor is very dark - he's the sort of person who tells dead baby jokes and laughs at them without feeling any sort of guilt. He doesn't feel guilt in general, but that's another story entirely. He's very fun and despite his terrible taste in jokes, he's actually quite the entertainer.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
He hasn't been diagnosed with anything, but considering what Ryuunosuke does for fun, it's safe to say he's crazy. He acknowledges that he's not normal, though he never calls himself insane. He doesn't see it as an issue that needs to be addressed. As long as he acts normal, right? Ryuunosuke also has barely any concept of empathy or sympathy and has problems understanding (most) feelings in general. Again, no formal diagnosis, but he's obviously messed up.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
His first kill, of course. Ryuunosuke accidentally killed his girlfriend when he was sixteen - she was a particularly masochistic woman who was very fond of near-asphyxiation during sex. Ryuunosuke got carried away and accidentally strangled her. He covered up the murder as best he could and worried that he'd be caught and jailed for it. He wasn't caught, but he did experience the thrill of killing. He started thrill-killing a year later and experimented with more bloody methods that he discovered he preferred.
14. What does he fear?
Ryuunosuke is actually fearless - he doesn't fear death because he "understands" it due to his proximity to death. He doesn't fear pain; he's rather masochistic. He doesn't fear being captured or killed because he's prepared for those possibilities since he does know what he does is forbidden. He doesn't have any common fears like heights or loud noises either.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
He's not a very driven person and he doesn't have any real aspirations in life. He's interested in killing and that's about it. He'd like to learn more about how the human body works, but that's really the only thing he cares about; and he doesn't care about it enough to make it into some sort of huge life goal.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
He'd rather not have people know that he's a murderer, but that isn't a particularly huge concern. Again, he's very laid-back and relaxed about everything. He can roll with the punches.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
Ryuunosuke didn't get along with his parents. They expected him to excel in school due to their own intelligence and placed a great deal of expectations on him when he was a child. He did spend some time trying to live up to their expectations, only to grow bored and give up. He returned home after running away five years ago and killed them.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
He had a younger sister. She was only a few years younger than him and she managed to exceed their parents' expectations. She was very smart, talented, and constantly tried to pick fights with Ryuunosuke. She was very controlling and tried to motivate him and get him to succeed in life like she was. She really did care about him, but Ryuunosuke killed her first when he returned home.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
No. Ryuunosuke has a couple of uncles and aunts, but he's not close to them. He doesn't particularly care one way or the other.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
No, there's no one like this in his life.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Ryuunosuke has plenty of friends, but no one he considers a best friend. He never stayed in one place for too long after leaving his family. Even in school he didn't have any best friends. Caster is the closest thing he has to a best friend - and Caster is the only person who's ever really understood him. Ryuunosuke's relationship with Caster is more of a teacher/student relationship than anything else, despite the fact that Ryuunosuke is technically Caster's "Master."
6. Does he have other close friends?
Again, he doesn't have any close friends, just casual friendships that he tends to leave behind whenever he moves.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
He makes friends very easily; he just doesn't keep them for very long. He also doesn't genuinely care about them so there's that.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Himself, of course. Ryuunosuke would never put anyone above himself. If he had to choose between friends or family, friends would come first. He murdered his family, after all.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
He's single, and quite pleased with it. He occasionally dates, but those girlfriends never last for too long. Once he's got her in bed he'll kill her.
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
No.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
Ryuunosuke finds women beautiful, but he doesn't actually form crushes. He's never really experienced "love."
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
Someone he can get in bed, someone he can subdue and kill, and someone who won't be missed, of course! ...What do you mean he's supposed to look for a partner he can spend the rest of his life with? That's boring!
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
No, thank god. Ryuunosuke's not interested in having children. He likes them, sure! But he wouldn't want any of his own. He'd probably kill them the second they got annoying. And babies are very annoying.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
No. Why would he bother with something like that? Waste of time and effort!
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
He's probably a three, though Ryuunosuke doesn't identify as heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. He tends to be interested in women more often than men, but that's because he can overpower and kill women easier.
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
Sex is great! Sex is awesome! Sex is cool! Sex that ends in murder is the best, however! This would be why he prefers to have sex with women - he's kind of small for a man and he doesn't want to be overpowered and reported to police for attempted murder. He likes sex and tends to pick women up fairly easily.
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
He likes to kill the women he sleeps with while he's fucking them. That should accurately describe everything. He's not interested in necrophilia, but he has the biggest bloodplay kink in the world. He's also rather masochistic, though he hasn't experimented with that.
Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
His birthday is January 31st in canon, which makes him an Aquarius! He fits the type, admittedly in a very fucked-up way.
2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
Ryuunosuke is kind of an oddball here. He doesn't identify as anything, though Christianity is probably closest... and his beliefs are horribly skewed. He's more spiritual than religious in that he does believe in God, but he believes God is an omnipotent being who loves all of His creations. He is a playwright and all of the people on earth are His actors playing the roles they were given. Some people have to amuse Him - those people are the ones who act on their strong convictions, for good or for bad. Ryuunosuke is one of those people. This isn't some bizarre way to feel better about what he's doing; Ryuunosuke genuinely believes that this is how God operates. He also doesn't feel any sort of guilt about killing people, so there's that too.
3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
Not at all. Ryuunosuke has absolutely no morals. There are things he'll look at and consider "bad" (such as destroying his "artwork"), but there isn't any sort of code of ethics to violate there.
4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
He's very curious and will question others at length to figure out why they believe what they believe. He's especially curious about religious beliefs that differ from his. Ryuunosuke will go into depth about his own views if prompted, but he's actually quite content to listen to others and learn from them. His own beliefs are unshakable and he won't alter them for any reason, but he does like hearing what others believe.
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
Surprisingly, no. Ryuunosuke is a very open-minded individual. He's very curious and he likes learning from everyone
Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
Ryuunosuke comes from a fairly well-to-do family. He left five years ago and has since been living on what money he can make. Since he doesn't particularly care for material objects, Ryuunosuke is quite comfortable. Though he did come into quite a bit of money after murdering his family, he still lives quite frugally.
2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
He's a college drop-out who never really made anything of himself. Ryuunosuke still has plenty of time to actually do something with his life (according to his parents, as well as society's normal beliefs there), but he considers what he's doing to be of much more importance. He's a serial killer who is rather well-known (he's called a "demon" by the press). He's rather fond of his social status and follows the news closely - not just because he wants to make sure the murders can't be connected to him but because he loves to hear the way things are described.
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
He lives in a rather shoddy apartment complex; it's really just a place to crash. He spends the majority of his time in Caster's workshop, but he does return home to sleep. Ryuunosuke is quite fond of his apartment; he's used to moving around frequently, so having a place he can actually call his own is nice.
4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
Leopard print clothing, obviously. Ryuunosuke isn't overly interested in material objects, but he does collect knives, scalpels, and other sharp objects. If he has spare cash, he'll occasionally buy video games, books, or sex. You know, forms of entertainment.
5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
Ryuunosuke obviously doesn't get paid to kill people. That would be really nice, actually, and he'd really enjoy being in that line of work. However, that's not what he does to make money; that's just a hobby. He tends to work odd jobs here and there; they're mostly minimum-wage and terribly droll, but he does what he has to in order to make ends meet and keep up his crime spree.
6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
...Killing people, obviously. Ryuunosuke is also very fond of reading, playing video games, and picking up chicks.
7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
You know those kids who can eat just about anything and never get fat because of their insane metabolisms? Yeah, Ryuunosuke never grew out of that. He doesn't eat a lot, but he doesn't have any issues when it comes to what he does eat. He doesn't eat very healthily and has a huge love for sweets. He's a bit too fond of sake and alcohol in general - his tolerance is thankfully quite high so he's not constantly drunk, but when he can get away with being drunk, he's drunk off his ass. With Caster around, he actually feels like he can get away with this more often!
Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite:
1. Color? Purple.
2. Smell? Blood.
3. Time of day? Midnight.
4. Season? Spring.
5. Book? ???
6. Music? Electronica.
7. Place? Run-down apartments.
8. Substance? ...would blood be too obvious?
9. Plant? Venus Fly Trap.
10. Animal? Leopard, obviously.
